Quantitative Decision Making

In my career, I have had the fortune to work with a very diverse set of businesses, from Fortune 100 companies to mom & pop shops, on their marketing efforts.  One commonality I have noticed between successful business of all sizes that allows those business to react nimbly and consistently make strong decisions is that many successful businesses intelligently track and apply data when making decisions.

In the field of marketing, while qualitative elements as extremely important in making a marketer’s message resonate with a target audience, every qualitative decision from the dimension of a banner or the copy of a tag line can be backed up and optimized by quantitative analysis as can a campaign as a whole. Below, I have included two examples of how a Merchant and an Affiliate could use a quantitative approach to calculating their profit in ShareASale.

MERCHANT SCENARIO:

Ursula sells her own brand of clothing and accessories.  Her average order size is $100 per order.  Her profit margin on an Affiliate driven order is 37.5%.  Ursula wants to know, after she pays a $550 setup fee, how many sales in ShareASale would she need to obtain a profit on her Affiliate marketing campaign.  Ursula uses the below formula to calculate how many Affiliate sales will be the breakeven point for her campaign:

Number of Sales = Setup Cost / (Avegage Order Size x Profit Margin)
or:
Number of Sales = 550.00 / (100.00 x 0.375)
Number of Sales = 550.00 / 37.5
Number of Sales = 14.66
Ursula now knows that, upon her 15th sale, her Affiliate program will become profitable and thus she decides to proceed with the campaign.

AFFILIATE SCENARIO:
Jeremy writes a sports blog and works with a Merchant that sells baseball memorabilia and a second Merchant that sells golf memorabilia.  Jeremy knows a lot about baseball, and it only takes him 2 hour to write a blog post on baseball.  Jeremy has to do more research for his golf articles, and it takes him 4 hours to write a blog post on golf.  Golf memorabilia has a much higher commission rate than baseball memorabilia.  On an average baseball post, Jeremy earns $300 in commissions.  On an average golf post, Jeremy commands $500 in commissions.  Jeremy wants to know which type of post earns a greater return on his investment of time.  Jeremy can create can create a simple ratio to compare his investment of time:

Commissions per Post / Hours to create Post
Baseball:
$300 / 2 hours
$150 per hour
Golf:
$500 / 4 hours
$125 per hour

Even though Jeremy earns more total commission on Golf posts, he earns more per hour writing.  With this information, Jeremy decides to shift more of his writing time to baseball in order to increase his return on investment.

These are just two examples of how a Merchant and how an Affiliate can use quantitative analysis to make positive changes within an affiliate marketing context.  Within the ShareASale platform, ShareASale has created a variety or reporting tools to address data gathering needs – from visits to banners and sales – that can be used in quantitative analysis.  Give our reports a review, asking yourself how you can use each report to better your business.

London Weird and Wonderful Shops

Shopping, the British high street is the default destination for most of us. Reliable and dependable, the high street provides all our essential requirements in one clean sweep. However, if wonder and excitement are what you’re after from your shopping experience, then you need to explore a little further and luckily for you we’re here to help. Tucked off London’s high streets are some hidden shopping enclaves with weird and wonderful products to tempt the inquisitive. To let you in on our little secrets, The Curiosity Cabinet has selected its top 5 weird and wonderful shops for Art Wednesday readers.

London’s most weird and wonderful shops are multi-functional stores which simultaneously work as exhibition spaces, shops, cafes, and are often artworks or curiosity cabinets in themselves. They are one-stop shops which stock a cross-over of antiques, fashion and interior products, providing an all-encompassing experience for the shopper. Below are a selection of stores which are bound excite and intrigue the curious in all of us.

Darkroom

As the name suggests, Darkroom is a lab of creative experiments. Combining new design, indigenous and African jewellery pieces with sculptural ceramics and textiles, Dark Room houses pieces that are simultaneously functional and decorative. The necklaces may be either worn on the body or hung on the wall as an ornament.  The well curated environment is a perfect space to peruse the sculptural ornaments, and for contemporary designers to showcase their jewellery, accessories and objects.

Wonderful – Sotis Shallow Large Bowl. This dark, moody ceramic bowl initially appears as a solid vessel yet it is so finely thrown that it is actually light as a feather. The textured, grain-effect of the exterior directly implies organic elements, but the dark, black colouring is obviously the result of the human hand. £275

Weird - Many of the objects sold in Dark Room have a similarly geometric style of clean lines and ethnic influences. This ‘Navajo Black’ Native Line wall hanging is a fine example of an object which is both geometrically bold in its design and materially delicate in its composition. The soft effect of the exposed warp threads and use of brass, gold and silver provides a stunning feature to this intricately woven tapestry inspired by the American Southwest. The tapestry’s designer, Justine Ashbee, is influenced by traditional Navajo patterns indigenous to this mountainous area and the rise and fall of the triangular pattern in this piece is reminiscent of a mountain range. £425

52 Lamb’s Conduit Street, London, WC1N 3LL.

Pelicans & Parrots

Oddly beautiful best describes the intriguing mix of vintage fashion, industrial furniture and antique interiors in stock at Pelicans & Parrots. A global treasure chest of wonderful discoveries, where the new and the old interact seamlessly, Pelicans & Parrots is an intelligently-styled store which lures you into its seductive world. Most of the pieces sold defy categorization, from a beautifully-constructed Ostrich feather headdress from Trinidad, a Tribal monkey skull in a Victorian dome, to a pair of late 80′s electric blue high-wasted ski pants.

Located on the edge of Stoke Newington and Dalston, that part of town where you never know what exciting discovery is next, Pelicans & Parrots has monopolised Dalston’s main stretch by opening an interiors based store and Pelicans & Parrots Black, just down the road, carries a highly-curated range of vintage fashion.

Wonderful - Ostrich feather headdress. Recalling the 1920s costumes of Les Ballets Russes, an Ostrich feather headdress from Trinidad exists as both fashion and art depending on the context in which it finds itself. Whether as a dramatic adornment or a piece of object art, the impressive array of shocking pink feathers, will excite even the most conservative shopper. £295

Weird - Taxidermy peacock. For the curiosity shopper this peacock is the perfect piece. Its exotic cobalt blue and sea green feathers are holographic in their intensity, demonstrating a perfect specimen of the awe-inspiring beauty found in nature. £995

Not always about the money, honey - Paromita Vohra

Not always about the money, honey

It was a special kind of wonderful when the Supreme Court rejected the patent claims of pharmaceutical company Novartis, over Gleevec, a drug, used to treat cancer. The company sought to prevent manufacture and sale at lower prices of similar drugs by Indian companies, claiming the innovation was solely theirs, a claim the court did not find sufficient basis for.

In a time when any talk of public good and the commons is pooh-poohed in favour of seemingly non-denominational ideas about monetary profit, it’s great to have values of fairness, humanity and genuine progress endorsed through a ruling that will allow millions of people access to treatment without which they could die—of debt if not neglect.

Corporates, as usual, moaned about how this would discourage companies from investing in research and making life-saving innovations. Sounding like those old-time conservatives who moan that gender parity will destroy the culture, yaniki, their culture.

If their life-saving innovations are priced prohibitively, how manytimes are they life-saving enough to count? At the heart of thisdiscussion is the question—how do we actually measure benefit and success?

Money monoculturists like to throw numbers at you. Are numbers and money the only way to understand benefit? Or are they just one of the many ways to do so?

Let’s take the Mumbai University teachers’ strike, which is partly about money. The teachers are fighting for arrears owed to them under the Sixth Pay Commission (issued in 2006). Why should something as routine as this become a matter of cajoling, protesting and boycotting? Along with increasing contractual hires and reducing grants?

With BCom exams underway, invigilation has been carried out by substitute staff. Three hundred and ninety of these are volunteers— retired service officers, masters students, tuition teachers, homemakers who have pitched in to help with invigilation duty, for Rs 100 a day.

Clearly those people aren’t doing it for private profit. The benefit they perceive to themselves exists in some other realm, which is hard to quantify. Altruism is often dismissed as touchy-feely, but there is something so deeply pragmatic about it, because it recognises that it is a combination of energies and motivations that keeps things moving and growing.

Government systems exist to make sure these energies are combined in a way that is fruitful to society as a whole. If they don’t, then we have to make sure they do. Not in some vague, platitudinal aam aadmi way, but in exactly these focused spaces like the university. Parents and students need to support the rights of teachers way before it comes to a strike stage, as a way of ensuring their own welfare.

Novartis may like to say they developed Gleevec completely. That it is their creation alone. In fact, not only does it build on pre-existing treatments (like everything in the world), but it was co-created by a man who worked for a research institute that was publicly-funded. So it was really a combination of inputs and investments that created this drug and perhaps a joint benefit should ensue from it—for companies and for people too, not just one or the other.

The monoculture of numbers that privatisation fundamentalists insist on, is a philosophy of decay, not progress, in the long run. After all if the formulae of money and numbers and spreadsheets were foolproof and people did not matter, then the guys who made Himmatwala would be laughing all the way to the bank no? Apparently they’re not. Maybe because they didn’t let the public laugh with them too.

Rajasthan Royals on Thursday awarded an IPL contract to Kumar Boresa, winner of the ‘Cricket Star Rajasthan 2012’ – a talent hunt jointly hosted by Rajasthan Royals and Dainik Bhaskar, sponsored by Sanskar School to unearth the hidden cricketing talent in Rajasthan. The 18-year-old Kumar who won the contest in 2012 signed a contract with the Rajasthan Royals worth Rs 10 lakh, and will don the Royal Blue jersey in IPL 2013.

The cricket star programme was organized in Rajasthan from September to November last year and included an SMS-based application system following which the applicants were tested on various skills in the centres of Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur by RR Coach Monty Desai and other appointed talent scouts. The top candidates from all these centres were called to Jaipur at the Sanskar School grounds for the Cricket Star Academy and after 3 days of matches, Kumar Boresa from Pali was chosen as ‘Cricket Star Rajasthan’ winner for his fine spin bowling, all-round skills, discipline, enthusiasm and fair play.

While the initial the grand prize was an internship with the Royals, the team management unanimously decided to upgrade the internship, impressed with the lad, to a full IPL contract with Rajasthan Royals.

Left-arm spinner - Boresa, who plays for Pali District Cricket Association, has represented the Rajasthan U-16 team in the Vijay Merchant Trophy in 2009 and 2010. The Class 10 student has also led the Stanford School team in many districts and state-level tournaments.

“I used to see the big players on television and never imagined I would get a chance to meet them or practice with them. It is an unforgettable moment for me, my family and my seniors who have always supported and helped me excel in cricket. I am grateful to Rajasthan Royals for giving me such an opportunity,” Boresa said.

Raghu Iyer, CEO, Rajasthan Royals, said, “With the cricket star programme, we are looking to find and promote talent in Rajasthan and provide an opportunity for the youth to showcase their skills. We were mighty impressed with the talent that Kumar displayed during the ‘Cricket Star Rajasthan’ programme, and we are all very excited about presenting him in the upcoming IPL season.”

Pollard stars in MI’s thrilling win over CSK

Report: Match 5 - CSK vs MI

Pollard stars in MI’s thrilling win over CSK

Mumbai Indians managed to score their first points of the season with a nine-run win over Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium late on Saturday night. After an early collapse, Kieron Pollard helped revive the MI innings to post a competitive 148 which the bowlers defended in fighting fashion against a resurgent CSK side.

Chasing a modest 149, CSK lost Murali Vijay (5) as Munaf Patel struck timber in his first over. Mitchell Johnson got MI their second success sending back Suresh Raina caught by Ricky Ponting. Michael Hussey (20) lived a charmed life after being dropped when on 1 and 9, but was finally castled by Harbhajan Singh.

At the halfway stage, CSK still required 91 runs from 60 balls and were struggling to find any sort of rhythm. Pragyan Ojha struck twice dismissing Dwayne Bravo (10) and S Badrinath (16) putting CSK on the mat.

Ravindra Jadeja (16) and Ravichandran Ashwin (2) fell in the pursuit of quick runs needing a miracle from Dhoni (51). He almost did just that, hitting 15 runs of Pollard's 17th over to help his team inch closer to the target. However, needing 12 off the final over, the first delivery saw Dhoni attempting to hit one over the midwicket boundary, but Kieron Pollard leapt in the air and plucked off a stunning catch. CSK eventually fell nine runs short of the target.

Earlier in the evening, the Mumbai Indians won the toss and opted to bat first. The move backfired as Dirk Nannes trapped Sachin Tendulkar for a duck in the very first over. IPL debutant, Ankit Rajpoot then had Ponting (6) caught at slip attempting a pull leaving the visitors at 18 for 2 in 3.2 overs. Dinesh Karthik (37) and Rohit Sharma (8) were both given an early reprieve, but Sharma failed to capitalizs on it and fell nicking Bravo to the wicket-keeper. Bravo struck again removing Karthik leg before in his next over, leaving MI stuttering at 59 for 4.

The slide continued as Ben Laughin then had Ambati Rayudu (7) caught at third man. Dwayne Smith joined the procession as he holed out off Ashwin. Pollard (57*) was the savior for MI playing a brutal innings smashing five huge sixes. Along with Harbhajan Singh (21*), Pollard helped MI put on a decent total on the board with a late flourish. Pollard ended MI's innings with a six to finish at 148 for 6 from their 20 overs.

Man-of-the-Match:  Kieron Pollard

Brief Scores: Mumbai Indians 148-6 in 20.0 Overs (Kieron Pollard 57*, Dwayne Bravo 2-44) beat Chennai Super Kings 139-9 in 20.0 Overs (MS Dhoni 51, Munaf Patel 3-29) by 9 runs.
