Assault at Work Solicitors

Employees are most at risk of being the victim of an assault in the workplace for the following reasons:
- They were not provided with the appropriate training in how to defuse a potentially volatile situation or protect themselves in the event of a violent assault if they were working in an environment where violence was a hazard.
- They were not provided with adequate personal protective equipment when working in a potentially dangerous environment i.e. in a prison or high security hospital.
- Staff shortages meant that employees were working alone when they should have had a colleague working with them.
- Their employer was fully aware that one of their employees was violent and failed to take the appropriate measures to remove the violent employee from the workplace.

Not always about the money, honey - Paromita Vohra

In a time when any talk of public good and the commons is pooh-poohed in favour of seemingly non-denominational ideas about monetary profit, it’s great to have values of fairness, humanity and genuine progress endorsed through a ruling that will allow millions of people access to treatment without which they could die—of debt if not neglect.
If their life-saving innovations are priced prohibitively, how manytimes are they life-saving enough to count? At the heart of thisdiscussion is the question—how do we actually measure benefit and success?
Money monoculturists like to throw numbers at you. Are numbers and money the only way to understand benefit? Or are they just one of the many ways to do so?
Let’s take the Mumbai University teachers’ strike, which is partly about money. The teachers are fighting for arrears owed to them under the Sixth Pay Commission (issued in 2006). Why should something as routine as this become a matter of cajoling, protesting and boycotting? Along with increasing contractual hires and reducing grants?
With BCom exams underway, invigilation has been carried out by substitute staff. Three hundred and ninety of these are volunteers— retired service officers, masters students, tuition teachers, homemakers who have pitched in to help with invigilation duty, for Rs 100 a day.
Clearly those people aren’t doing it for private profit. The benefit they perceive to themselves exists in some other realm, which is hard to quantify. Altruism is often dismissed as touchy-feely, but there is something so deeply pragmatic about it, because it recognises that it is a combination of energies and motivations that keeps things moving and growing.
Government systems exist to make sure these energies are combined in a way that is fruitful to society as a whole. If they don’t, then we have to make sure they do. Not in some vague, platitudinal aam aadmi way, but in exactly these focused spaces like the university. Parents and students need to support the rights of teachers way before it comes to a strike stage, as a way of ensuring their own welfare.
Novartis may like to say they developed Gleevec completely. That it is their creation alone. In fact, not only does it build on pre-existing treatments (like everything in the world), but it was co-created by a man who worked for a research institute that was publicly-funded. So it was really a combination of inputs and investments that created this drug and perhaps a joint benefit should ensue from it—for companies and for people too, not just one or the other.
The monoculture of numbers that privatisation fundamentalists insist on, is a philosophy of decay, not progress, in the long run. After all if the formulae of money and numbers and spreadsheets were foolproof and people did not matter, then the guys who made Himmatwala would be laughing all the way to the bank no? Apparently they’re not. Maybe because they didn’t let the public laugh with them too.

April 06, 2013 Unknown
The cricket star programme was organized in Rajasthan from September to November last year and included an SMS-based application system following which the applicants were tested on various skills in the centres of Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur by RR Coach Monty Desai and other appointed talent scouts. The top candidates from all these centres were called to Jaipur at the Sanskar School grounds for the Cricket Star Academy and after 3 days of matches, Kumar Boresa from Pali was chosen as ‘Cricket Star Rajasthan’ winner for his fine spin bowling, all-round skills, discipline, enthusiasm and fair play.
While the initial the grand prize was an internship with the Royals, the team management unanimously decided to upgrade the internship, impressed with the lad, to a full IPL contract with Rajasthan Royals.
Left-arm spinner - Boresa, who plays for Pali District Cricket Association, has represented the Rajasthan U-16 team in the Vijay Merchant Trophy in 2009 and 2010. The Class 10 student has also led the Stanford School team in many districts and state-level tournaments.
“I used to see the big players on television and never imagined I would get a chance to meet them or practice with them. It is an unforgettable moment for me, my family and my seniors who have always supported and helped me excel in cricket. I am grateful to Rajasthan Royals for giving me such an opportunity,” Boresa said.
Raghu Iyer, CEO, Rajasthan Royals, said, “With the cricket star programme, we are looking to find and promote talent in Rajasthan and provide an opportunity for the youth to showcase their skills. We were mighty impressed with the talent that Kumar displayed during the ‘Cricket Star Rajasthan’ programme, and we are all very excited about presenting him in the upcoming IPL season.”

Pollard stars in MI’s thrilling win over CSK
April 06, 2013 Unknown
Mumbai Indians managed to score their first points of the season with a nine-run win over Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium late on Saturday night. After an early collapse, Kieron Pollard helped revive the MI innings to post a competitive 148 which the bowlers defended in fighting fashion against a resurgent CSK side.
At the halfway stage, CSK still required 91 runs from 60 balls and were struggling to find any sort of rhythm. Pragyan Ojha struck twice dismissing Dwayne Bravo (10) and S Badrinath (16) putting CSK on the mat.
Ravindra Jadeja (16) and Ravichandran Ashwin (2) fell in the pursuit of quick runs needing a miracle from Dhoni (51). He almost did just that, hitting 15 runs of Pollard's 17th over to help his team inch closer to the target. However, needing 12 off the final over, the first delivery saw Dhoni attempting to hit one over the midwicket boundary, but Kieron Pollard leapt in the air and plucked off a stunning catch. CSK eventually fell nine runs short of the target.
Earlier in the evening, the Mumbai Indians won the toss and opted to bat first. The move backfired as Dirk Nannes trapped Sachin Tendulkar for a duck in the very first over. IPL debutant, Ankit Rajpoot then had Ponting (6) caught at slip attempting a pull leaving the visitors at 18 for 2 in 3.2 overs. Dinesh Karthik (37) and Rohit Sharma (8) were both given an early reprieve, but Sharma failed to capitalizs on it and fell nicking Bravo to the wicket-keeper. Bravo struck again removing Karthik leg before in his next over, leaving MI stuttering at 59 for 4.
The slide continued as Ben Laughin then had Ambati Rayudu (7) caught at third man. Dwayne Smith joined the procession as he holed out off Ashwin. Pollard (57*) was the savior for MI playing a brutal innings smashing five huge sixes. Along with Harbhajan Singh (21*), Pollard helped MI put on a decent total on the board with a late flourish. Pollard ended MI's innings with a six to finish at 148 for 6 from their 20 overs.
Man-of-the-Match: Kieron Pollard
Brief Scores: Mumbai Indians 148-6 in 20.0 Overs (Kieron Pollard 57*, Dwayne Bravo 2-44) beat Chennai Super Kings 139-9 in 20.0 Overs (MS Dhoni 51, Munaf Patel 3-29) by 9 runs.
